Dye Penetrant Inspection is an inspection method used to locate surface breaking defects in non-porous materials. Consideration that needs to be given in selecting the technique of this inspection includes:

• The type of discontinuity sought;
• The expected size of the discontinuity;
• The surface finish on the material.

Care and consideration must also be given to the compatibility of the chemicals used for the inspection and the material being inspected so that there are no permanent degradation to the material.
